Reef Octopus Skimmer Cleaning

Adding a sink to my fish room was probably one of the best things I could have done.  Sure makes cleaning the skimmer a lot easier!

Octopus Skimmer Cleaning

Getting the skimmer ready to add for the new system. Running the skimmer for an hour with a cup or so of vinegar cleans it right up!

Cleaned up and hooked up!

Reef Octopus Skimmer 1 Year Update

I have had my Reef Octopus 6″ Recirculating Skimmer (DDNW-150-6530B) up and running for a little over a year now. I have to say that it’s worked flawlessly since it was installed (10/2011). It’s still the quietest skimmer I’ve seen. Hopefully someday I can put all the maintenance equipment in a room and not have to look at it, or at least that’s what my wife says. 😉

Skimmer Collection Cup Overflowing Because of Filter Pads

Last week a strange thing happened when I was changing my filter pads.  My Reef Octopus Skimmer’s collection cup began to overflow after I changed out the filter pads.  This week I thought I would film the process to see if it happened again… it did.  I use Marine Depot’s Emperor Aquatics Super Filter Felt 50 micron pads for small particles and Lifegard Aquatics Bonded (blue) Filter Pads for large particles. I think that one, or both, of the pads actually increase the water’s surface tension temporarily when added to the system.  The increased surface tension would keep the skimmer’s bubbles from popping. When it happened last week I turned the recirculating skimmer pumps off to see if the water level was running high, but it was normal. Must be the pads.

Took out my Prizm Pro Skimmer this weekend and put in a Reef Octopus 6″ Recirculating Skimmer (DDNW-150-6530B). I used the Prizm Pro for about 3.5 years (as long as the tank has been running) and it worked well but I wanted to try a recirculating skimmer. I like the thought of not having to use a big feed pump to get the skimmer to work efficiently. The Reef Octopus is already producing some “great stuff” and I’m impressed by how quiet it is! 🙂

12/17/11 Update:  The skimmer is doing great, still very quiet.

1/2/12 Update: Happy New Year!  I think the skimmer has finished breaking in. I’ve got it cranked up to the highest water level (you can see the levels in the picture) and it’s cleaning quite well.  I did notice that when I turn off the skimmer, tank water flushes back up the air intake pipes to the muffler and sometimes pops out of the top, causing a little mess but not a big deal. Still very happy with the skimmer 🙂
