Cree Lumia 5.2 Build – 1 Year Update

Well, it’s been about a year since I built my LEDgroupbuy light. I’ve gradually increased the LED intensity from 35% to 60% and am very happy with the results. I may boost the intensity up a little bit but I don’t think much. The only coral I have that seems to not be as colorful is the hammer coral which looks a little lighter. The clams seem to be very happy which makes me happy! 🙂

The only issue I’ve run into is that one of my MakersDRIVERS 5UP PRO units gave out here last week. I came home and noticed all the LED chips but one were off (far right on). I turned the lights off for a bit and then back on. All the Lumia chips fired up but the right side of my tank looked darker and more actinicly lit. The left side of the tank was bright and white. Turns out that when the MakersDRIVER went out it stop communicating to the other 5UP PROs down the line and the result was each Lumia chip down the line was running at a 100%. This could have been a bad deal for the coral, jumping from 60%-100%, but they weren’t too upset. I dug out an old window screen and placed it over the left side of the tank which seemed to filter out enough light to look consistent with the 60% output.

After the 5UP PRO went out I looked at the LED Group Buy website and saw the 5UP PROs only had a 90-day warranty… Fortunately after emailing LED Group Buy they priority mailed out a replacement at no cost. 🙂 I’m glad I went with a company who stands behind their, and their supplier’s, products!

Cree Lumia 5.2 not working

Here’s what the light looked like after I restarted it (evening). The sunrise/set controller plugs in on the right and daisy chains to the left. The second set of lights you can see are out and all chips to the left are running at 100% :-/.

Even though the power was turned off to this 5UP Pro it still had about 1% power going to channel 3. I assume the Makers sunset/rise dimmer sends a little power through the audio cables.

Bad MakersDRIVER 5UP PRO Burnt Spot

Notice the burn spot between the fuse and fan wires. I’m guessing this is where the issue was.

Aquarium Update 10-28-14 – 11 Months

11 month update. Fish and corals are fairly happy. The refugium is full of pods. I still need to get the green hair algae under control. Phosphate levels ~ 0, Nitrates ~7 ppm.

Aquarium Update 10-28-14 – 11 Months

Wow has life been busy here lately. A few big deadlines at work due by the end of the year… hopefully after that I can get back into water world. I’m still changing water and doing routine maintenance but the hair algae still persists. Water tests this evening showed phosphates registering at ~0 and nitrates at ~7 ppm. The tank has been up and running for 11 months now and I’m hoping to hit the “less green” phase. 🙂

Here’s an update video of what the refuge and tank looks like:

4 Month Tank Update

I took a couple quick videos of the tank yesterday. Everything has been up and running for about 4 months now. My nitrates and phosphates are settling down. The refugium is showing great growth in the bug/pod populations. 🙂

This video turned out a little choppy but I figured I’d post it anyway.

A meeting at the algae clip!

An Hour in Water World with New Camera

Reef Tank, Marine Fish, Anthias, Lyretail Anthias

I picked up a new Sony Handycam (HDR-XR260V) for work yesterday and thought I would try it out on the reef tank for an hour. I think it did a pretty good job! Make sure to watch in HD and full screen. 🙂

Easter Weekend Aquarium Update Photos & RO

Between reloading and hitting the range this weekend I took a few update pictures of the tank. Oh and I also ordered a new BRS 75 GPD RO/DI 6 Stage Deluxe System as the Easter Bunny thought I should upgrade 😉 (it was actually about time to replace the membrane and filter).

As for the tank, everything seems happy. The Achilles and the Rabbitfish are even getting a long most of the time. It’s kind of funny but the leg that the Serpent Starfish lost is still moving round on the bottom of the tank. It actually looks like the starfish is growing another leg (pictures), I wonder if the leg will try to grow another body, lol.

Happy but Skeptical Fish :)

Thought I would post up a recent video of my happy, but skeptical fish.

Just a short video and some pictures of the tank / refugium.  Lately, I’ve added an Achilles Tang, Ornate Leopard Wrasse, 6 Line Wrasse and some live rock. Oh and a few Eagle Eye Zoanthids from my friend Jim.

A few TearDrop Maximas, Crocea, Maxima etc. in the fuge.

Achilles Tang for the main tank. So far he was been really social and has left all my LPS corals alone. 🙂
