Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)

Here are a couple shots of our Zebra Moray Eel. He’s been a pretty neat addition to our reef tank.  He’s very low-key as we rarely see him out except for feeding time.  When he’s hungry he sticks his head out of a hole, like in the photo below.  When we first got him a couple years ago he was about 16 inches long, now he’s probably around 36 inches long and pretty girthy.  We feed him every 4-7 days depending on when he shows up.  He usually eats 3 large shrimp cut up and covered in Cyclop-eeze delivered by feeding stick.  As you can see by the video below, he puts up with his mean coral banded shrimp tankmate.  Oh and we really aren’t sure if he’s a “He” or “She.”

  1. My next tank i build when we move next year will have an eel. I think they just awesome!

  2. I think they are great too. I had a snowflake eel and yellow fimbriated eel in one of my earlier “creep” tanks. The snowflake was such a spazz! He would knock things over in the tank constantly, especially when he smelled food. The fimbriated eel was pretty cool, but mean. I’d love to have a Hawaiian Dragon Eel one day!
